Mercury Dining Room and Rail

Dined on February 11th.

entrance

For my first post of 2017, I introduce you to the Mercury Dining Room and Rail located downtown Minneapolis on the corner of 5th and Marquette. I discovered Mercury in a Mpls.St.Paul. magazine article, and chose to try them out because their menu looked attractive.

First Impression: Two appealing things I noticed right away; the restaurant is in close proximity to the light rail and you can see the kitchen from outside the restaurant. As for the dining area, it was a bit dark, which made it hard to appreciate the space and decor.
Eats:

short-rib

For my meal, I ordered the Beef Short Ribs ($23.95). The ribs came with charred cauliflower and roasted potatoes. I would love to say the meal was amazing, but I was underwhelmed. The ribs were tender, and the sauce on the cauliflower and potatoes was good, but both lacked flavor. It felt as though the entire dish was under-seasoned.

chicken-tacos

Sarah ordered the Smoked Chicken Tacos ($12.95). The chicken’s smoky flavor stood out from other tacos you might order around town. The tortilla had interesting texture and flavor that worked well with the little bit of heat from the jalapenos. That said, something about this dish did not wow us either. Not bad (she finished the whole thing), just not something she would want to come back for.
Verdict: We found the Mercury experience to be lackluster. The service seemed a bit rushed and impersonal. The food was OK, but not up to par with other restaurants we have visited at similar price points. The restaurant did just open, so they could still be ironing out some of the kinks and also trying to establish their identity.
